Very good game on an objective level, and I'll probably try to keep playing it after this review, but I don't think it's really "my thing" and I should've made sure I liked the Classics before trying to play a Greatest Hits version of them.Īlso, f*ck you Sega. Maybe it'll catch a few stragglers who just haven't heard of the series until now and would've been enamored with the Classics had they played them earlier in their lives, but I think for the vast majority this is more of a niche treat for Sonic fans and retro gamers who can put up with some level-based b*llshit than it is a mainstream platformer that will appeal to most. I'm sure it's very fun for the fans, and its art direction is absolutely to be lauded, but it is not for me and I don't think it'll appeal to most people who haven't played the Classic Sonic games and enjoyed them. These visuals are gorgeous, I really like the bonus stages, the soundtrack is quite nice and the overall game is probably an absolute blessing for the poor Sonic fans who've been suffering through sh*t game after sh*t game for decades as far as I'm aware.īut I'm not a Sonic fan, and I think I forgot that when buying into the hype around this game. It really feels like the game purely amounts to "memorize everything before you can enjoy it", and I don't think that's for me. And there are plenty of those even when you're a newbie, but unless you're REALLY good at this game every single fun moment will be interrupted by a wall or a confusing level gimmick or some assh*le enemy you had no way of seeing and only noticed after losing all your rings to it. But even while acknowledging that I'm bad and actively trying to improve, I can't help but feel like most of this game amounts to "get good by playing a sh*tload so you can speedrun, otherwise you can't have fun".Ī lot of the enjoyment seems to rely on those scant few moments where you're speeding through the game, faster than light itself, watching the level go by and hardly touching the controller. I'm really f*cking bad at this game, I got stuck on Flying Battery Zone for nearly a week straight and only made it out with 2 lives and a single ring, and I now remain stuck on Stardust Speedway Act 2 as I write this due to being unable to make out when to damage Metal Sonic. I will fully admit that I'm mad because I'm bad. ![]() So, when I pick up a game presumably about maintaining speed and mastering level layouts to clear something as fast as possible, I don't think it's unreasonable to be frustrated and disappointed when even the most minute attempts at fulfilling that purpose on a first playthrough are thwarted by b*llshit enemy placement and hazards that I can't see due to the camera killing itself the moment you go faster than "mildly speedy". But i've always had an interest in platformers, as well as anything momentum-based. To call myself a Sonic casual would be putting things lightly. The most i've played of this franchise has been Rush Adventure on the DS and Advance 1 on the GBA, both of which I completed and enjoyed. I'm going to preface this by saying I am not a Sonic fan. ![]()
